7-Eleven was a former cycling team founded in the United States in 1981. The team was sponsored by the supermarket chain 7-Eleven and the bicycle manufacturer Schwinn. The team was active in the period 1981-1990 and continued under the name Motorola from 1991 to 1996. What's special is that between 1989 and 1996 the team rode Eddy Merckx bicycles completely. The team was founded by the 29 year old American and former Olympic cyclist Jim Ochowicz. As the name implies, the team started with 7 riders of which Eric Heiden was the team captain. Later the Canadian Ron Hayman joined the team. The 7-Eleven team appeared in 1985 in the movie American Flyers. This was also the year that the team started riding professional races. And with success, because during the Tour de France in 1986 Alex Stieda was the first Canadian ever to win the yellow jersey. Not that he could enjoy it for a long time as he only had the jersey for one day. The biggest victory and highlight of the team was during the Giro d'Italia of 1988. Andy Hampsten won the final victory and also went home with the title 'King of the Mountains'.
