Retro Cycling Jersey Molteni Black - 1958-1976

A RedTed replica of Molteni’s black cycling jersey. This comfortable cycling jersey is a replica of the shirt worn by the Italian professional cycling team Molteni during the period 1958-1976. This racing jersey is from the Merckx era (1971-1976). A beautifully tailored performance jersey from Molteni.

Molteni was a former Italian cycling team that was active from 1958 until the end of 1976. Molteni was a salami producer based in Arcore, in the Milan region. As a cycling team, Molteni won 663 stages. Many of these victories were won by Molteni’s most famous rider: Eddy Merckx. This Belgian rider won both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia five times.

Many well-known cyclists rode for this team, including the Italians Gianni Molta, Michele Dancelli, Marino Basso, the Swiss René Binggeli, the Luxembourger Edy Schütz and the German Rudi Altig. From 1971-1976, the Molteni team was built around captain Eddy “the Cannibal” Merckx. During the Merckx years, the team consisted of a mix of Belgian and Italian riders. The Belgian core included riders such as Joseph Bruyère, Jef de Schoenmaecke, Frans Mintjens, Jos Spruyt, Jos Huysmans and Vic van Schil. In 1971 and 1972, the super-domestique was “Monsieur Bordeaux-Paris” Herman van Springel. During the Merckx period, the team consisted almost entirely of Belgian riders; in 1974, the Italian Molteni team consisted only of Belgian cyclists. Two Dutchmen rode for Eddy: in the first year, 1971, that was Rini Wagtmans, and in the final year, 1976, Cees Bal. Two well-known Italian cyclists who were part of this team were Gianni Motta and Marino Basso. These Italian riders had 48 and 34 stage wins respectively. In 1976, Molteni stopped sponsoring the cycling team permanently.
