RUDY PEVENAGE GUEST DURING TOURCAFÉ AT CYKLIST

15 September 2020 By Sjuul Bos News

As you may have already read in our previous blog, there are two tour cafes at Cyklist. The next one is on 17 September at 19:30, with (former) cyclists Danny van Poppel, Pim Ligthart and Michel Cornelisse, and is free to visit! The previous tour café was on 10 September, with former cyclist Rudy Pevenage and writer John van Ierland as guests. Also present was former cyclist and former manager Jacques Hanegraaf (winner of Paris-Brussels, Amstel Gold Race and geletruidrager in the Tour de France 1984). They talked about Rudy's and Jacques' victories, their lives in the cycling world and Rudy's biography Der Rudy, written by John.

RUDY PEVENAGE

Rudy Pevenage is a former Belgian rider and active from 1976 to 1988. His most successful race was the Tour de France in 1980, where he won the 2nd stage and the points classification! He wore the yellow jersey for nine days and also kept a beautiful green jersey. He also won the 2nd stage of the Giro d'Italia in 1985. Rudy, also known as 'the redhead from Moerbeke', cycled for different teams from The Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, like IJsboerke, Capri Sonne, Del Tongo and Superconfex-Yoko.

After his professional cycling career, he remained active in the cycling world. He has been a caretaker and team manager for Histor, La William, Bianchi and T-Mobile Team. His time with this last team ended in 2006, when Jan Ullrich was fired for doping. Rudy was his personal caregiver and coach at the time. After all these extraordinary experiences, John van Ierland (together with Rudy) decided to write the life story of Rudy Pevenage.

DER RUDY - BIOGRAPHY OF RUDY PEVENAGE

In this biography Rudy's experiences in the world of cycling are discussed. This means stories about the 1980 Tour de France, but also about the raids of doping doctors on riders' hotels during the big cycling races. The book also discusses how Rudy dealt with Jan Ullrich's doping use, and that Rudy even made a double-walled cola can to hide the doping. Nevertheless, his biography also reveals how he himself dealt with doping and the offering of money to win races during his pro career. So, just as his cycling life began in yellow, it ended in blood red. A very interesting story, with a look at what goes on behind the scenes in the world of cycling. We bought Der Rudy (€20) to read it in one breath. We can really recommend you to do the same!
